Project Choice #1: “Scenic Byways”
“Scenic Byways” is a chance to explore a particular “Scenic” stretch of road in the United States (or Canada) and planning a 3 day ROAD TRIP on your chosen road. This particular choice will use the website “Americas Scenic Byways”, which is a resource website dedicated to providing the most comprehensive details of over 850 Scenic (Beautiful/Wild/Amazing) roads throughout the United States. This choice involves 6 Tasks that will help you “tell the story” of your Scenic Road Trip! The final product for the Scenic Byway Project will be a five-page packet.
Task 1 – Choose a US Or Canada Scenic Byway
For Task One please log on to http://scenicbyways.info/ and “surf” the site a bit. Please chose one of the Scenic Byways featured that you think looks fun/interesting. After you have chosen your Byway, please share your choice with Mr. Gilbert to get approval. This can be done in person or via email message.

Task 2 – Cover Page & Intro Paragraph
This task involves making a cover page for your project. On this page you need to include the basics of your project...1) author 2) period, 3) date and 4) Scenic Byway Name. This cover page should also display pictures or drawings about your roadway in order to prepare readers for your road trip! This task also involves writing a one-paragraph introduction to your Scenic Byway. **Please do not include a state map on this page!**
Task 3 – Byway Map
Task 3 involves creating a map of your particular Scenic Byway. This map is used to give the reader a basic visual on where your road would take them. Major cities, Points of Interest, Physical Features, Road Names, Parks, etc. should be the main focus of this road map. Byway Maps can be hand drawn or computer generated, but needs to fit on ONE piece of paper.
Task 4 – Scenic Byway Basic Logistics
The Byway Logistics is a worksheet that needs to be filled out that categorizes the basics of your Scenic Road Trip. This form is downloadable and should be a very quick activity to help outline the basics of your Byway. This worksheet can be printed off and handwritten (neatly) or retyped...remember FINAL DRAFT Quality will affect your final grade!!

Task 5 – Trip Itinerary
An Itinerary is a basic summary of what the daily plan will be while exploring your Scenic Byway. The Trip Itinerary for this project choice will include 3 days and 2 nights...there is NO NEED to figure out travel from Waconia...your trip starts AT your chosen location with your chosen adventure vehicle! Where are the BEST spots to stay overnight, eat, and visit? This portion of the project should be a “day by day” list of any and all activities associated with your adventure. Things that NEED to be included within this Itinerary: 1) Major Attractions, 2) Meals 3) Night time Lodging...2 nights 4) miles traveled per day and 5) Start and End Location. Your Trip Itinerary MUST be typed and fit on ONE SHEET of paper.

Task 6 – Top 2 Places
During this task you will be choosing (according to your Geographic opinion) the 2 TOP places that EVERY traveler on your chosen Scenic Byway must visit. You will need a paragraph summary for each one of these places with this task. This Write-Up should be typed and reflect the highest level of grammar possible...please get these proofread by an adult before handing in final draft! (might be nice to include a picture of each chosen location on this page)
NA Project Choice #2: “Epic Road Trip”
Do you have a particular place or event in the United States that you have ALWAYS wanted to visit? Well then the “Epic Road Trip” unit project choice is for you! This choice involves picking a specific location (or event) and planning an Epic Road Trip to this location for a visit. Places choices must be more than 500 road miles away from Waconia and your trip must be no shorter than 3 days. The Epic Road Trip involves 5 basic tasks that will help in the planning of visiting your chosen destination. The final product for the EPIC ROAD TRIP will be a four-page packet.
Task 1 – Pick Your Destination
Pretty easy task...spend a bit of time online or with an atlas and choose an EPIC destination. Once you have chosen your destination, please share you choice with Mr. Gilbert to get official approval to move forward with your research. (this can be done in person or throughemail) Note: Why do you need approval? You need to have your destination approved because two students from the same class CAN NOT be working on similar EPIC trips. Remember your EPIC excursion must be MORE than 500 miles from Waconia!

Task 2 – Cover Page & basic Intro to your “Epic Destination”
This task involves making a cover page for your project. On this page you need to include the basics of your project...1) author 2) period, 3) date and 4) Final Destination. This cover page should display pictures and/or drawings about your Epic Destination in order to PUMP your readers up and get excited for your road trip! This task should include a ONE paragraph brief introduction to your Epic Place or Event that you are visiting.
Task 3 – Epic Road Trip Logistics Worksheet
The main question here is...”how would someone visit your destination from Waconia, MN?! This is a chance to look at basic cost and logistics of taking a vehicle to your chosen destination! The results of this worksheet should be displayed in your final product.

Task 4 – Road Trip Map
Where you going? This should be a simple road map showing your basic journey from Waconia, MN to your EPIC Destination. This is a BIG IDEA map and should focus on basic roads/highways, states, major cities and how the reader would go about getting to your destination. Please do not worry about visiting places between Waconia and your destination...the point is to ONLY visit your chosen event or place! Road Trip Maps can be hand drawn or computer generated, but needs to fit on ONE piece of paper.
Task 5 – Final Destination Write Up (2 paragraphs)
What makes your destination EPIC? This is a two-paragraph summary of why someone would want to visit your chosen place. Please take some time on this summary and really try to SELL IT...make people want to visit your chosen destination. This Write-Up should be typed and reflect the highest level of grammar possible...please get these proofread by an adult before handing in final draft! (might be nice to include a picture of your destination on this page)
FINAL DRAFT PRODUCT - How to Hand it in!
Projects should be handed in using a packet format. It is encouraged that students create these packets using a computer and a word processing software, meaning these will be typed and will appear to be professionally created. (Word, Pages, Google Docs) These packets will vary in length depending on the number of “Tasks” involved in your project choice. All packets need to be printed on normal 8 ½ X 11 printer paper and will be stapled in the upper left hand corner. No need to include a binder or plastic covers when turning in your final product!
