Iqbal has to struggle with the forces of materialistic thought. He had to bring about a happy marriage between the esoteric and the exotic knowledge to drive
home his point of the purification of the self before a start could be made. By self Iqbal always means the 'conscious self' or Nafas.
"It is the lot of man to share in the deeper aspirations of the universe around him and to shape his own destiny as well as that of the universe, now by adjusting himself to the forces to his own ends and purposes and in the purpose of progressive change God becomes a co-worker with him, provided man takes the initiative : 'verily God will not change the condition of man, till they change what a within themselves' (13:12). If he does not take the initiative, if he does not evolve the inner richness of his being,if he ceases to feed the inward rush of advancing life, then the spirit within him hardens into stone and he is reduced to the level of dead matter."
It is therefore, primarily the resuscitation of the human ego or of his being which Iqbal chose as his target ; for it is by its very control that the real self can unfold its beauties and help to ease the miseries of mankind. Hence potentialities and how it could be built up for the survival of human goodness.He takes his clues from the Holy Quran, and takes up relevant verses to interpret them in the manner of modern knowledge with which the educated Muslim is now well aware.

With the dawn of the twentieth century, there arose, a star, in the sky of the sub-continent, that has just passed out of our sight, after having shone with a luster peculiarly its own. That star was the poet, and the great thinker, Dr. Sir Allama Muhammad Iqbal. His loss will be deeply mourned not only by his countrymen, who loved his work, but also by his admirers of the Ummah.
He was visionary, like Nietzsche. He was blessed with an inborn tendency to capture imagination and attention. Indeed, during his childhood, the reflection of a mature poet had been revealed. The credit goes to Iqbal for dreaming of a separate Muslim state and making it a reality. He conceived an idea, to do something good for people. When an idea passes through the furnace of observation and facts, it transforms into an ideology.
Ideology is a system of the ideas forming basis of an economic or political theory. Iqbal’s ideology has been soaked into Islam. According to Iqbal, Islam is the only source of spirit, energy, zest and life. He had acknowledged that the Muslims of this religion could not flourish without Islam. All aspects of his poetry revolve around single axis and that axis is Islam.
As Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah said: “Iqbal is the greatest interpreter of Islam”.
He employed this very Islamic ideology to concentrate, scattered thoughts of Muslims. He made them realize that they were not doomed to deterioration and exploitation. They belonged to a dignified religion. It can be rightly said:
“Let’s see the history’s pages once,
Love made its Lovers walk at thorn,
When trampled nations are awakened,
Then at last the liberty borns.”
Actually, Iqbal gave incessant stir to ease the loving ignorant nation. He realized them, their faults and shortcomings. In short, by infusing a new life into the decadent nation. He brought about revolutionary change and the Muslims enters the political arena inspired by glorious past and hopes of a still more glorious future.
In the early period of his poetic career, he promoted ‘Nationalism’ but later on, he invested his interest in ‘Socialism’. It is also a significant part of his ideology. In ‘Khiz-e-Rab’ he advocates the down trodden laborers of the world and denunciates capitalism, projected by Karl Max. The spark that there was in him, was kindled into a flame by the socio-political scenario of India. During his life, he utilized the opportunity of studying weak fibers of western civilization.
In 1930, on the eve of ‘Khutba-e-Allahabad’ he clearly transplanted his idea that Muslim majority areas should be combined to form a free, independent state for the Muslims of Sub-continent. He wanted to throw the yoke of slavery and made Muslims realize that they had potential to break the manacles. His ideology was to stand on their own feet as the equals of the people of the west. He implored them by these striking words;
‘What are we to do, O Nations of the East?’
He always emphasized on acquiring education. He was a storehouse of ideas. He always stressed on productive and practical efforts. He never devised shortcuts to success.
Once, his son entered his room and said; ‘I am Javed’. Iqbal replied; ‘Prove it, prove it, you are Javed’.
Along with all his ideologies, ‘Khudi’ is the hallmark of this poetry. In his essay, ‘Reconstruction of Religious Thoughts in Islam’ he developed a link between self and Islam. As a philosopher, Iqbal listened to the beating of his own heart than to the promoting of his mind”.
‘Khudi’ as perceived by him is the name of attributes, found in an ideal character. They are self-realization, self-reliance, self-assistance, spirit of independence, a sense of honor, noble idealism and action. Its object is not material aggrandizement, but spiritual adornment. It can be interpreted as ‘ego’ or ‘self’ with positive point of view. Moreover, dignity, esteem and honor are conspicuous features of Iqbals’ Khudi.
Actually, Khudi leads towards avenues of optimism and positivity. That’s why, he pens down; that the fundamental intention of Khudi is to urge you on actions. He means by term ‘Khudi’
A point of pure light,
Which is called Khudi,
Is a spark of life,
Under a covering of our clay.
That’s why, the ‘Shaheen’ was his choicest bird, just as ‘Skylark’ of Shelley and Nightingale of words-worth. He had acknowledged that the Youth was the only asset of this nation which could broaden the horizons. When he asks the Youth to become a ‘Shaheen’ or ‘Hawk’, he means the inculcation of these high objectives. To show that the strength to be cultivated is desired by Iqbal for a laudable purpose.
It is Khudi which says that, never underestimate your abilities, have faith in yourself.
In a nutshell, it can be said that he uses ‘Khudi’ as a tool to awaken the people of Sub-continent and injects into their minds the idea of free homeland. Iqbal says that Khudi can be approached, but never achieved by any person. So he has explored many secrets of Khudi which can make us able to grasp his sense, his philosophy and his ideology.
As the throbbing of his heart can be listened by his last words;
The days of this Faqir have come to an end;
Another knower of secrets may or may not come.
